Westminster Abbey

westminster abbey

Westminster Abbey is a beautiful Gothic building famous for the pomp and pageantry of the royal weddings and funerals held here.

On Christmas Day in 1066, the Abbey was to witness the first Coronation of William the Conqueror. Throughout the years many other monarchs have been crowned here, in fact all monarchs with the exception of Edward V and Edward VIII who were never crowned.

The last monarch to be crowned was the Queen in 1953. Visit Poets' Corner and you'll see many memorials to famous poets, authors, musicians and scientists such as Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde and Sir Isaac Newton. In the Nave is the grave of the Unknown Warrior.

The Abbey receives no funding from the Crown, State or Church so there's a charge to cover expenses. All donations are welcome.

For those wishing to attend services there is NO charge. However, should you wish to have a Verger Guided tour or audio tour there will be a charge.

Note: Photography and filming are NOT allowed within the Abbey.
