Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge was designed by Horace Jones and John Wolfe Barry and took eight years to complete.

In 1894 the bridge was finished and now London had two bridges. Up until this time the only bridge crossing the River Thames was London Bridge.

The new bridge was the largest and most sophisticated bascule bridge ever built and was hydraulically operated, using steam to power the enormous pumping engines. Since 1976 the bascules have been driven by oil and electricity instead of steam.

Until 1977 the bridge was painted brown but to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee the bridge was painted red, white and blue.
