TATE BRITAIN
London Art Gallery
Tate Britain (formerly known as the London Tate Gallery), has
been home to the national collection of British art since 1897.
It has a
huge collection dating back from 1500 to the present and the 'Modern Art and
Tradition' section explores Britain’s cultural heritage.
The gallery owns
so much art that in 2000 some was moved to the newly opened Tate Modern on
Bankside.
Located at Millbank in London and is one of a
family of four Tate galleries which display selections from the Tate Collection.
The three galleries are the Tate Modern which is also in London, the Tate
Liverpool in the north-west, and the Tate St Ives in Cornwall in the south-west. Check out their
Websites where you can explore the entire Tate Collection
online.
Tate Britain boasts a fine collection of art with works from notable
artists such as Constable, Gainsborough and Blake, to name but a few. It also
showcases the works of JNV Turner and others and most recently the works of David
Hockney.
The modern art exhibited ranges from the Pre-Raphaelite
period to Cubism. You can see the work of Giacometti, Picasso, Moore, Hepworth
and Warhol. The gallery annually exhibits the artists that are short-listed for
the Turner Prize.
Both the Modern and Britain are connected by a high speed spotted boat along the River Thames.
The Tate Modern is located on Bankside and linked to
St Paul's Cathedral by the New Millennium footbridge. The speed boat is
decorated with spots and based on a theme by Damien Hirst.
Admission to the art gallery is FREE except for special
exhibitions.
