Notting Hill Carnival is Europe's largest
street carnival and second in the world only to Brazil's in Rio. This vibrant and colorful festival reflects the rich diversity of London and has been held
every year in Notting Hill since 1966.
Originally held as a local street
party by West Indian immigrants to the area the festival has now grown so huge that
it attracts millions of people from around the world every year.
The
carnival is free and is held on the last Sunday and Monday (bank holiday weekend) in
August. For these two days locals wake up to the throbbing sounds of Carnival Bands preparing for the festival which starts at 9am on both days.

Sunday - Children's Day
Sunday is Children's Day and a celebration which
focuses more on children and young adults.
The months of preparation are finally over and now is the time to have fun! All this hard work results in the most spectacular
celebration of Caribbean art and prizes are awarded for the best costumes.
All the performers are under 21 and
many have helped in the year-round preparation for this wonderful event. Monday is
Adult's Day.
All this hard work results in the most spectacular
celebration of Caribbean art. There are many amazing Notting Hill Carnival floats and the costumes
are breath-taking. Steel drums and dancing are the main focus of the carnival and the
rhythm and beat is so infectious you cannot stand still... so just relax and enjoy!
The streets of Notting Hill are lined with happy dancing people and the stalls overflow
with delicious Caribbean cuisine.
The Carnival parade should finish by 9pm and that's when the partying begins with many private parties going on until the small hours of the morning.
Carnival Route
This truly is a mind-blowing multi-cultural event
which attracts people from all over the UK and places as far away as Ecuador and
Brazil.
