National Theatre

The National Theatre is ideally placed on the banks of the river on Southbank.

The theatre has three auditoriums under one roof which are the Olivier, Lyttelton and Cottesloe.

The Olivier Theatre is an open-stage with seating for about 1,120 people. Lyttelton Theatre has seating for about 890 and the Cottesloe Theatre (a studio theatre on three levels) has seating for up to 300.

The revolving stages and performances are stunning and well attended. For example, this year Vanessa Redgrave appeared in her one woman show 'The Year of Magical Thinking' which was a triumphant success. In October Juliette Binoche appeared with choreographer Akram Khan in a production called in-i. In November Ralph Fiennes will play the title role in Sophocles' 'Oedipus Rex'.

Plays get booked up very quickly and as there are special offers with seats for as little as £10, it's a good idea to check their website regularly.
