National Theatre

The Royal National Theatre is ideally placed in the trendy area of Southbank on the banks of the River Thames.

The theatre has three auditoriums under one roof - the Olivier (named after Sir Laurence Oliver), Lyttelton and Cottesloe.

The revolving stages and performances are stunning and well attended throughout the year. There is a famous statue of Laurence Olivier outside the theatre as Hamlete.

From it's origin in 1963 it was based at the Old Vic in Waterlool and moved to it's present location in 1976. The Royal National Theatre is locally known as The National and is a publicly funded theatre.

  • Olivier Theatre is an open-stage with seating for about 1,120 people.

  • Lyttelton Theatre has seating for about 890.

  • Cottesloe Theatre (a studio theatre on three levels) has seating for up to 300.
