London Underground

Oxford Circus Tube Station

London Underground (Tube) is a central part of London transport. It first opened in 1863 and was the first underground railway in the world.

The Tube runs everyday from around 5.30am (Sunday 7.00/7.30am) until around midnight and is closed on Christmas Day.

Some lines are much faster and more modern than others and the Piccadilly line (from Heathrow), Jubilee and Victoria lines are amongst the most modern and quickest.

If you're traveling during the hot summer days all its best to avoid peek times from 8.30am until 9.30am and then from 5.00pm - 6.30pm.

Air-conditioning is not provided and it can get stuffy and very uncomfortable. On a stifling hot day it's best to take the bus. It may take a little longer but it will definitely be more enjoyable.

Another good line to use is Docklands Light Railway which although above ground, is considered to be part of the tube network. It's also a great way to see the sights of London and you also get a great view of the London Eye.

There's a London Transport Journey Planner which gives the best route to take for your destination and you can also download a London Underground Map
