Virgin London Marathon
17 April 2011

London Marathon fever will be hitting the streets of London on 17 April 2011! The months of training will soon pay off because on Sunday thousands of runners will race over 26 miles for their favorite charity.

Every year there's a different sponsor for the race and for 2011 the charity sponsor is Oxfam which is a global movement full of passionate people who all have one thing in common, putting an end to poverty in countries such as Ethiopia, Honduras, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

Best places to cheer them on include Surrey Quays, Canary Wharf, Tower of London, Embankment, Parliament Square and finally the Mall and Buckingham Palace.

The race begins at Greenwich Park and Blackheath and will finish at the Mall, St James’s Park near Buckingham Palace.

The first race was run on 29 March 1981. Over the years it has grown and grown and now it's one of the most popular races in the world.

On Sunday 17 April 2011, people will be coming from all over the world to compete in this great event and thousands of people will line the streets of London to cheer them on.
