London festivals are a great way to join in the fun and really get to know this exciting city.
January
New Year in London is exciting and fun. With so many clubs and restaurants to choose from you really are spoilt for choice. If clubbing is not your scene then head down to Big Ben and the London Eye for midnight celebrations. On New Year's Day there's the amazing annual Parade which is now in its 21st year.
FEBRUARY - Festivals in London
Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is celebrated in London with Pancake Day. It's the last day before Lent and the time to indulge in rich food such as pancakes!
The Chinese New Year festival and parade in central London marks the start of the Year of the Pig. It starts at Chinatown and then winds its way through Leicester Square, Charing Cross Road and eventually finishes with celebrations in Trafalgar Square.
MARCH - London Festivals
All over the world the national day of the Irish is celebrated in grat style. In New York there's a huge parade and in London it's a major festival. Although not a national holiday as in Ireland, everyone joins in the fun and drinks large amounts of the very popular drink - Guinness!
April - London Festivals
Easter is a great time to visit London. Spring is sprung and all the parks and gardens are ablaze with flowers. There are many events and things to do and for children there are the Easter Egg Hunts and three weeks off school!
Everyone in London looks forward to this great race which takes months to prepare for. People compete from all around the world and all of London is there to cheer them on.
Every year Shakespeare's birthday on 21 April is celebrated over 3 day on the Southbank of London... in and around his famous
Globe Theatre. As the day coincides with St Georges Day (23 April) the Mayor of London ensures both are equally enjoyed and celebrated.
MAY London Festivals
May Day
May Day (Labour Day) is a national holiday in London and there are many street parties and dancing around the May Pole. As well as all this traditional merriment this is a time for demonstrations and rallies which are often held in Trafalgar Square or Hyde Park.
The annual Chelsea Flower Show is a feast of flowers and gardens with around 50 gardens and more than 100 floral exhibitors in the Great Pavilion.
Baishakhi Mela
Celebrating the Bengali New Year, the Baishakhi Mela brings the very best of Bengali arts, music and culture to Banglatown in east London. SCOOP - On London's Southbank - Free films are part of the More London Free Festival with a mix of classic, cult and current films each Wednesday, Thursday and Friday throughout June. In July and August are free lunchtime and evening music and free theatre.
The Festival is an annual Arts Festival which is held over a three week period in June and July and includes all types of music including classical, jazz, opera and also world music.
