London Bridge

London bridge links the area around Monument Tube Station to Borough in Southwark and the Southbank of London.

Since around 55 AD, many bridges have been built on this site. For example, in 1176 a stone bridge was built and in 1823-31 a bridge with 5 stone arches was erected on this site.

In 1924 the discovery that the bridge was sinking an inch (3 cm) every eight years sent alarm bells ringing and in 1967, the City of London put the bridge up for auction. On 18 April 1968, the bridge was sold to American businessman Robert P. McCulloch of McCulloch Oil for US$2,460,000.

Present Bridge

The present bridge was built from 1967 to 1972 and on 17 March 1973 was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II. Many visitors to London make the mistake of thinking this bridge is Tower Bridge but this bridge is the next one down, next to the Tower of London.

Popular Nursery Rhyme

There is a popular nursery rhyme called associated with the bridge which many children sing without realizing what the nursery rhyme is about. The song describes how the people of England felt about Anne Boleyn who was one of Henry V111 wives who was beheaded at the tower of London. When her daughter Elizabeth 1 ascended the throne the criticism of her mother stopped - Nursery Rhyme Lyrics
