Holland Park
Holland Park is one of London's most romantic parks. It's just off Kensington High Street and Notting Hill and is the perfect place to chill out when you need a break from the hustle and bustle of Kensington.
It's one of the prettiest parks in London and great for taking walks at any time of the year and was formerly home to the Earl of Holland. Holland Park School (situated practically in the park) was the flagship school of the Labour Party in the 60s. Many Labour MPs, including former MP Tony Benn, sent their children here.
During the Second World War, Holland House was badly bombed and after the war the estate passed into public ownership. In 1952 the park was officially opened to the public and Holland House now houses a very popular youth hostel and the Belvedere Restaurant and temporary exhibitions are situated in nearby rooms.
If you're coming to the park from Kensington High Street you'll find a wide tree-lined road with a cricket pitch, tennis courts and golf bunker. Carry on up and you'll come to Holland Park Theatre, Holland House and the many lovely flower gardens. The woodland areas are full of bluebells and daffodils in the spring and roses during the summer.
The park has great facilities for children including an adventure garden, 'under eights' area and a very good cafeteria serving sandwiches, pastries and lunches. Nearby is an ice-cream shop where you can buy delicious Italian ice-cream and lollies.
The lovely Kyoto Japanese Gardens were built in 1991 for the London Festival of Japan and are a central feature of the park. They're full of flowers, shrubs and ornate features such as a pond with waterfalls and bridges.
This lovely park is renowned for it's peacocks, ducks and swans and during the summer months he open-air plays and operas which are held under the canopied theatre.
