Harrods London
London Department Stores
Harrods London opened its doors to the public in
1849 and has always prided itself on a reputation for excellence and luxury.
Much more than a shopping destination, the store is quintessentially British and definitely not to be missed. The dècor inside is amazing and whatever you need is here.
History of the Store
As with most success stories the store emerged from humble origins in the East End of London.
In 1849 Charles Henry Harrod was forced to move his grocery shop from Stepney to Brompton Road in Knightsbridg and from this day onwards he never looked back. At this time the store also extended credit for the first time to customers such as Oscar Wilde, the legendary actresses Lilly Langtry and Ellen Terry,
In 1985 the store was bought by the al-Fayed brothers for £615 million and after the death of his son Dodi and Diana, Princess of Wales, Mohamed Al Fayed commissioned two memorials.
The first is a shrine to them both and the second is a bronze statue located by the Egyptian escalator at door three. It's of the two dancing on a beach under the wings of an albatross - the title is 'Innocent Victims'.
Christmas
At Christmas the store is ablaze with seasonal gifts and the food hall overflows with an abundance of truly sumptuous goodies. There's always the traditional Santa Claus and Hampers can be ordered online!
