The Globe Theatre is an authentic thatched wooden reconstruction of the original open-air playhouse where many of the most famous plays of William Sheakespeare were written and performed.

Every year Shakespeare's birthday is celebrated in the Globe and on the river. This replica of the orginal (which was just 200 yards away), is the brainchild of American actor and director Sam Wanamaker.

Shakespeare is famous the world over and the theatre is always full of students, tourists and those who love to see his plays. Actors, directors, musicians and designers all help by sharing their insights and practical experience with students, teachers and members of the public of all ages and nationalities.

There are on-site workshops, in-service training, distance learning programs and seasonal events. Every year more than 50,000 students take part in activities, tailor-made to the specific needs of the group, from primary school to post-graduate level.

Book To See A Play At The Globe For Christmas

If you'd like to see a play, the season normally runs from May to October. However, this year is the exception! For the first time ever, Shakespeare's Globe will be opening its doors over the festive season with a Christmas show.

Footsbarn's Christmas Cracker - Following their Shakespeare Party in 2008, the acclaimed and totally unique Footsbarn Theatre Company return to the Globe with their Christmas Cracker, a family feast of carnival, comedy and Christmas cheer. So come down to Southbank and enjoy this wonderful Christmas cracker.

The world's largest exhibition devoted to Shakespeare and the London in which he lived and worked. Housed beneath the reconstructed Globe Theatre on London's Bankside, the exhibition explores the remarkable story of the Globe, and brings Shakespeare's world to life using a range of interactive displays and live demonstrations.

If you feel like a bite to eat the restaurants and cafes are open throughout the year and you don't have to see a play to enjoy them. The Cafe on the Piazza floor provides coffee, lunch and afternoon tea and the grill restaurant offers lunch and dinner. All with amazing views of the Thames.
