Fireworks Displays In London

...for Bonfire Night

On 5 November fireworks displays in London celebrate Guy Fawkes Night (also know as Bonfire Night).

Guy Fawkes Night Poem
Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot.

On this day in 1605, a group of Catholics attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament with several dozen barrels of gunpowder. They failed and the leader of the group, Guy Fawkes, was tried as a traitor and sentenced to the most horrific of deaths by being hung, drawn and quartered.

The failure of the coup was soon after celebrated with bonfires and today effigies of Guy Fawkes are burnt on top of bonfires throughout the UK.

Children always enjoy collecting money to buy fireworks for this night and a few weeks before the 5 November they make a guy, sit him in a wheelbarrow or box and chant 'a penny for the guy'.

The celebrations were traditionally held at home or in private communal gardens. Potatoes wrapped in foil, cooked in the bonfire (called jacket potatoes) are baked, cut in half, covered with butter and sprinkled with salt and pepper. Great on a cold winter evening in November in London.

Today many local boroughs organize huge events with the largest at Alexandra Palace in north London. Many of these public firework events are free but some do charge. This covers the cost of the fireworks and food.
