Borough Market

Borough Market is a traditional London food market full of color and aromas which will get your taste buds racing.


It has occupied its present site for 250 years and is London’s oldest food market.


The market is spread over a few small cobbled streets close to Southwark Cathedral, Vinopolis City of Wine and Clink Prison Museum.


Borough is the oldest part of the London borough of Southwark and for many years was famous for its bawdy inns and unsavoury lifestyle.


Not far from the market on London's Bankside is Globe Theatre which is just a few yards from where the original theatre once stood.


Popular London Market...

Borough Market has been used as a location for many films and more recently for the film Bridget Jones's Diary. The Globe Pub in Bedale Street was used for the flat where Bridget Jones lived.


The Market Porter Pub


The film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban used the Market Porter Pub at 9 Stoney Street as the location for the Third Hand Book Emporium and the Leaky Cauldron.




Shops and Stalls at the Market

The popular Brindisa Spanish Foods in Floral Hall on Stoney Street. It was voted Best Retailer 2006 by readers of the Observer Food Monthly and is famous for the chorizo sausage burgers which everyone loves.


Check out Danilo Manco with olive oils personally sourced from Italy and at Orkney Rose you can can enjoy organic smoked salmon and organic heather-fed lamb.

If you're a lover of cheese be sure to pop into Neal's Yard Dairy at 6 Park Street.


They've been here since 1996 selling the most delicious selection of cheeses and have another Neals Yard Dairy in Covent Garden.


For beer lovers The Rake is a very popular place to go. It's run by the Utobeer stall and has just one tiny room with a canopied heated patio. If you like exotic beer you'll love it!


This is a very trendy and popular market with local office workers and tourists and one of the hidden gems of London.

Market Opening Times

The Market is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with Saturday being busiest after 11am.


The sensible shopper gets here between 8am and 10am for the pick of the day. Thursday is usually a relaxed shopping day and the demonstration chef is on hand for ideas, tips and demonstrations in the Jubilee Market.


Parking around Borough is limited, but there are plenty of public transport links:


  • By tube to London Bridge or Borough underground stations

  • By train to London Bridge mainline station

  • By bus to London Bridge, Borough High Street or Southwark Street

  • By foot along the Thames Path on the Southbank or over London Bridge from the City
