Big Ben
Big Ben Clock is world famous for the sound of the bell chiming the hour on BBC world radio. During the Second World War the sound of the bell brought much comfort to many and still does to those abroad and at home listening to the BBC world service.
The clock is very accurate, in fact everyone in London sets their watches to it. It's been in London since 1859 and is naturally thought of with great affection and carefully looked after as t's checked three times a week.
The magnificent clock tower can be seen from both sides of the River Thames being 316 feet high with 393 steps inside. It's very close to the Palace of Westminster and Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey, the London Eye and Southbank.
Although many people think the famous name refers to the clock, in reality it's the name of the bell which was made in the East End of London in Whitechapel and was the second bell to be made for the clock as the first cracked.
Although the present bell is also slightly cracked, it doesn't affect the wonderful chimes which can be heard all over Westminster.
